Stony Point, town, Rockland County, southeastern New York, on the Hudson River. In Stony Point are Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, encompassing a military museum with displays of American Revolution equipment and artifacts, and the site of Treason House, in which General Benedict Arnold and the British major John André met in September 1780 to discuss Arnold's surrender of West Point to the British. During the American Revolution, the rocky cliff jutting into the Hudson, for which the settlement is named, was fortified by Americans, who were later overpowered by British forces. The fortifications were strengthened by the British, but on July 16, 1779, the fort was recaptured by American forces led by General Anthony Wayne. Although the American troops did not attempt to hold the fort, its capture was important in strengthening the morale of the Continental Army.
