Saranac Lake, village, Franklin and Essex counties, northeastern New York, in the Adirondack Mountains, on the Saranac River (dammed at this point to form Lake Flower), near Lower Saranac Lake (hence its name); incorporated 1892. It is a noted tourist and health center near Lake Placid. In the village are facilities of the American Management Association; the Trudeau Institute Research Laboratories, a medical research center; and a junior college. The area was settled in 1819, and the village developed around a tuberculosis sanitarium founded by Edward L. Trudeau in 1884. The Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson was a patient here in 1887-88; the cottage he lived in remains a local attraction.
