Rome, city, Oneida County, central New York, on the Mohawk River, near Utica; incorporated as a city 1870. The city has large fabricated steel and copper-products industries. Telecommunications and electronic aerospace research has helped to diversify the city's economy. A school for the deaf and Erie Canal Village (a reconstruction of a mid-19th-century settlement) are here, and Griffiss Air Force Base (1942) and a large fish hatchery are nearby. The community grew around Fort Stanwix (1758; now part of Fort Stanwix National Monument), where an important treaty with the Iroquois was concluded (1768). During the American Revolution the fort was the scene of an unsuccessful British siege (1777) that preceded the nearby Battle of Oriskany. The community, named for Rome, Italy, developed as an important portage point on the route from the Hudson River to the Great Lakes and was the site, in 1817, of the first construction on the Erie Canal. Population 43,826 (1980); 44,350 (1990); 34,950 (2000).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
