Peekskill, city, Westchester County, southeastern New York, on the Hudson River; settled 1665, incorporated as a village 1839, as a city 1940. The Paramount Performing Arts Center is here and the scenic Bear Mountain Bridge, spanning the Hudson River to Bear Mountain, is nearby. The community, named for the Dutch navigator Jan Peek, who traded with the Mohican people here from 1667 to 1677, was part of Cortland until 1940. In the 18th century, it developed into a small industrial center, prospering with the manufacture of iron stoves until about 1920. During the American Revolution Peekskill was an important patriot post, and in 1777 it was burned by British troops.
