New City, unincorporated community, seat of Rockland County, southeastern New York, near the Hudson River. It is primarily a residential center with some industry. Settled in the mid-18th century, New City grew as part of the town of Clarkstown and experienced rapid expansion after World War II. Population 35,859 (1980); 33,673 (1990).
