Mamaroneck, village, Westchester County, southeastern New York, on Long Island Sound, near New York City; incorporated 1895. It is residential with some industry; manufactures include yachts, processed food, machinery, chemicals, and wood and metal products. The village has fine harbors for yachts and small boats. The Emelin Theatre is here. The site of the present-day village was purchased from the Native Americans by an English colonist in 1661. The Native American name for the site, probably meaning “where the fresh water falls into the salt,” was retained. A minor engagement of the American Revolution was fought here in 1776. James Fenimore Cooper, the American author, resided here for some years and wrote The Spy (1821) here.
