Lockport, city, seat of Niagara County, western New York, near Buffalo; incorporated as a city 1865. It is a transportation and manufacturing center situated in an area noted for its fruit orchards and limestone and sandstone quarries. Major products include motor-vehicle parts; plastic, paper, and wood items; chemicals; and processed food. The community, settled in the 1820s, grew as a center for the construction of the Erie Canal (opened 1825) and is named for locks on the canal here.
