Lindenhurst, village, Suffolk County, southeastern New York, on Long Island and Great South Bay; settled 1780s, incorporated 1923. Although the city is primarily residential, electronic and machine parts are manufactured here. The community was platted in 1870 after the arrival (1867) of the railroad. Many German immigrants settled here. It is named for its linden trees; it was known as Breslau from 1870 to 1891.
