Lake Placid, village, Essex County, northeastern New York, on Mirror Lake and Lake Placid, at the base of Whiteface Mountain, in the Adirondack Mountains; incorporated 1900. The village, a popular summer and winter resort surrounded by the lands of Adirondack Park, was the scene of the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980. The John Brown Farm State Historic Site and Grave, the restored farmhouse and burial spot of the noted abolitionist, is nearby. The site of the village was first settled in 1800 but was later abandoned; it was not resettled until about 1849. The community was later developed as a resort. Population 2,490 (1980); 2,485 (1990); 2,638 (2000).
