Huntington, unincorporated town, Suffolk County, southeastern New York, on the northern shore of Long Island; settled 1653. It comprises many communities, including Commack, Huntington Station, Dix Hills, Greenlawn, and Northport, and has numerous harbors on Long Island Sound. The town is chiefly residential, with electronic and research industries, and is the seat of Friends World College (1965) and Seminary of the Immaculate Conception (1926). Historic attractions include the site where the American patriot Nathan Hale was reportedly captured by the British in 1776 and the place, in the West Hills section, where the poet Walt Whitman was born. The community is named for Oliver Cromwell's birthplace, Huntingdon, England. Population 18,243 (1996 estimate).
