Geneva, city, Ontario and Seneca counties, western New York, at the northern end of Seneca Lake (one of the Finger Lakes); incorporated as a city 1898. It is a farm-trade center; local industries manufacture processed food, printed materials, machinery, electronic equipment, and metal products. Geneva is the site of Hobart and William Smith Colleges (1822) and Rose Hill, a Greek Revival mansion built in 1839. The community, settled in the late 1780s, is named for Geneva, Switzerland. It grew after Seneca Lake was linked to the Hudson River by the Erie Canal.
