Freeport, village, Nassau County, southeastern New York, on the southern shore of Long Island; settled 1659, incorporated 1892. It is a residential suburb of New York City and a boating and fishing center; access to the Atlantic Ocean is through Jones Inlet. Manufactures include marine supplies, plastic goods, and electronic equipment. The name of the community was derived from the practice, in colonial times and the early 19th century, of using the port to avoid paying customs.
