Crown Point, resort town, Essex County, northeastern New York, on the western shore of Lake Champlain; incorporated 1868. In 1609 the French explorer Samuel de Champlain fought the Iroquois near the site of the present-day town. Considering the area a strategic point on the route from New York to Canada, the French constructed Fort Saint-Frédéric here in 1731. In 1759, during the French and Indian War, the British troops under the command of Sir Jeffrey Amherst destroyed the French fortification and began construction of a new fort, which was never fully completed. Early in the American Revolution, a detachment of Green Mountain Boys captured (May 11, 1775) the British fort. The site was again held briefly by the British in 1777. Crown Point State Historic Site contains ruins of the fortifications and a museum. Population 1,837 (1980); 1,963 (1990).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
