Bronx, The, northernmost borough of New York City, the only New York City borough on the mainland. Coextensive with Bronx County, it is traversed by the Bronx River and bounded on the north by Westchester County, on the east by Long Island Sound, on the south by the East River (across which lies Manhattan Island), and on the west by Spuyten Duyvil Creek and the Harlem and Hudson rivers. Its total land area of 109 sq km (42 sq mi) includes many islands, notably North and South Brother islands in the East River and Hart and City islands in Long Island Sound.
