Among the borough's many institutions of higher education are Fordham University (1841), Herbert H. Lehman College (1968) of the City University of New York, Manhattan College (1853), College of Mount Saint Vincent (1911), and State University of New York Maritime College (1874). Points of interest include the Van Cortlandt House (1748); the Valentine-Varian House (1758), which houses the Bronx County Historical Society (1955); the Edgar Allan Poe cottage (1812), where the writer lived from 1846 to 1849; and the Hall of Fame for Great Americans (1900). Also of note are Wave Hill (1965), which includes botanical gardens and an outdoor sculpture garden; and the Bronx Museum of the Arts (1971).
