Amsterdam, city in Montgomery County, eastern New York, on the Mohawk River. It is a manufacturing and shipping center in an agricultural area; products include toys, plastics, electronic equipment, clothing, and novelty items. Settled in 1783 by the Dutch, the community was called Veedersburg until 1804, when it was renamed for Amsterdam, Netherlands. The city was incorporated in 1885.
