West New York, town, Hudson County, northeastern New Jersey, a residential and economic center on the Hudson River, west of New York City (hence its name); incorporated 1898. The town is known for the production of clothing and embroidered goods. The Dutch lived in the area in the 17th century, but a permanent settlement was not established until 1790. Population 39,194 (1980); 38,125 (1990); 45,768 (2000).
