Weehawken, township, Hudson County, northeastern New Jersey, a residential and industrial community on the Hudson River, opposite New York City (with which it is connected by the Lincoln Tunnel); settled about 1647, incorporated 1859. The harbor can accommodate oceangoing vessels. Weehawken was the site in 1804 of the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, in which Hamilton was fatally wounded. The township's name may be derived from an Algonquian term for “land of maize.” Population 13,168 (1980); 12,385 (1990); 12,385 (1996 estimate).
