Wayne, township, Passaic County, northern New Jersey, on the Passaic, Pompton, and Ramapo rivers, near Paterson; incorporated 1847. Manufactures include pharmaceuticals; paper, wood, and, plastic products; electronic equipment; toiletries; and processed food. William Paterson College (1855) and a junior college are here. Of interest are the first house (1696) built here and the Dey Mansion (begun 1740), where George Washington had his headquarters in 1780. The community, separated from Manchester township in 1847, is named for General Anthony Wayne.
