Union City, city, Hudson County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Hudson River, adjoining Jersey City and opposite New York City; incorporated 1925 with the merger of the towns of West Hoboken and Union Hill (hence its name). It is a commercial and residential hub and has an embroidery industry. The Dutch established a trading post nearby in 1614. It was founded by German-American printers in the 1850s.
