Teaneck, township, Bergen County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Hackensack River; incorporated 1895. It is primarily a residential suburb located west of New York City. A branch (1954) of Fairleigh Dickinson University is here. The area was settled by the Dutch in 1686, and the community was platted in 1774. Population 39,007 (1980); 37,825 (1990); 37,825 (1996 estimate).
