Summit, city, Union County, northeastern New Jersey, near Newark; incorporated as a city 1899. It is a residential and medical service center. The city also has some industry, including the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The community, settled in 1738, is situated on the Second Watchung Mountain and was a colonial lookout point during the American Revolution.
