Ridgewood, village, Bergen County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Saddle River, near Paterson; incorporated 1894. It is primarily a residential community. Settled in the early 18th century, it was the scene of fighting during the American Revolution. The community was known from 1810 as Newton and from 1829 as Godwinville; it was renamed Ridgewood in 1866. The settlement grew slowly until the arrival of the railroad in 1848. Population 25,208 (1980); 24,152 (1990); 24,936 (2000).
