Nutley, town, Essex County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Passaic River, a residential community near Newark; incorporated 1902. Pharmaceuticals and dyes are manufactured. The town was settled in the 1680s; in the late 19th century, writers and artists established a colony here. Population 28,998 (1980); 27,099 (1990); 27,099 (1996 estimate).
