North Bergen, township, Hudson County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Hudson River, near Jersey City; incorporated 1861. It is a residential and transportation hub with some industry. The village of Bergen was established by Dutch colonists around 1630. It is considered the first municipality in what is now New Jersey. In 1688 the community of North Bergen was separated from Bergen. Several communities, such as Hoboken, Weehawken, and Secaucus, were later set off from North Bergen. Population 47,019 (1980); 48,414 (1990); 48,414 (1996 estimate).
