New Providence, borough in northeastern New Jersey, in Union County, on the Passaic River, 26 km (16 mi) west of Newark. Research laboratories, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical firms are located here, and rose cultivation is an important business. New Providence was founded about 1720 and incorporated in 1899. Population 11,439 (1990); 11,907 (2000).
