Maplewood, township, Essex County, northeastern New Jersey, near Newark; incorporated as Maplewood 1922. Major products include jewelry, maps and globes, and metal items. Maplewood is the site of the Timothy Ball House (1743), visited by General George Washington during the American Revolution, and the home of the American engraver and painter Asher B. Durand. The area including present-day Maplewood was purchased by the English from the Delaware tribe in the late 1660s. Community growth began after the railroad arrived in 1838. Population 22,950 (1980); 21,652 (1990); 21,756 (1996 estimate).
