Long Branch, city, Monmouth County, eastern New Jersey, on the Atlantic Ocean and a branch of the Shrewsbury River (hence the city's name); settled 1668, incorporated 1904. It is a tourist center; manufactures include electronic equipment and clothing. Monmouth College (1933), an army communications center, and a racetrack are nearby. Long Branch was a fashionable beach resort during the 19th century, when several U.S. presidents vacationed in the community; President James Garfield died here in 1881. Population 29,819 (1980); 28,658 (1990); 31,340 (2000).
