Livingston, township, Essex County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Passaic River, a residential suburb of Newark; incorporated 1813. The community supports many cultural activities, including a symphony orchestra and an arts council. The township was chiefly a rural area of dairy farms until World War II. It is named for William Livingston, governor of New Jersey from 1776 to 1790.
