Levittown, name of three unincorporated residential communities, built by the construction firm of Levitt & Sons, Inc., one in Nassau County, southeastern New York; a second in Bucks County, southeastern Pennsylvania; and a third in Burlington County, western New Jersey. The New York community (pop., 1996 estimate, 53,286), part of the town of Hempstead, was built between 1946 and 1951 as a low-cost housing development for World War II veterans and their families. More than 17,000 homes were constructed using prefabricated units and assembly-line techniques. The development in Pennsylvania (population, 55,362 estimate, 55,362), mostly built between 1952 and 1958, is modeled after the community in New York. The New Jersey community, mostly constructed between 1958 and 1963, is now known as Willingboro.
