Jersey City, city in northeastern New Jersey. The seat of Hudson County, Jersey City is a port on a densely populated peninsula bordered by the Hudson and Hackensack rivers, the upper portion of New York Bay, and Newark Bay. It is connected to the city of New York by the Holland tunnel and the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rapid transit system. Jersey City's economy was previously based on manufacturing, but it now has growing financial, insurance, and real estate sectors. Since the late 1980s the city's waterfront has been transformed by construction of new financial office space and new upscale retail and residential buildings.
Educational institutions in the city include Jersey City State College (1927), Saint Peter's College (1872), and a community college. Liberty State Park, on the waterfront, affords a view of the Manhattan skyline, and a ferry connects the park with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The massive Liberty Science Center has extensive exhibits on the environment, health, and invention.
