East Orange, city in northeastern New Jersey, on the Second River. Located in Essex County, East Orange is a residential community near Newark. It was settled in 1678, set off from Orange in 1863, and incorporated as a city in 1909. It is the largest of “the Oranges” (Orange, East Orange, South Orange, West Orange). Manufactures include electrical pumps, swimming-pool equipment, and processed food. The city's name is derived from its location east of the city of Orange, which was named in honor of William, prince of Orange (later William III).
