Dover, town, Morris County, northern New Jersey, on the Rockaway River; incorporated as a town 1869. Glassware, tools, electronic equipment, and printed materials are produced in the city. Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. Army research and development center, is nearby. Settled in 1722 in a rich iron area, the community grew as an iron-manufacturing center. Lakes and mountainous resorts are in the area. The community is named either for Robert Dover, an anti-Puritan English lawyer, or for Dover, England.
