Bloomfield, township, Essex County, northeastern New Jersey, near Newark; incorporated 1812. Manufactures include pharmaceuticals and electric equipment. Bloomfield College (1868) is here. The site was settled in 1660 by Puritans from Connecticut. The town is named for Joseph Bloomfield, a general in the American Revolution and governor of New Jersey (1801, 1803-12). Population 47,792 (1980); 45,061 (1990); 45,061 (1996 estimate).
