Asbury Park, city, Monmouth County, eastern New Jersey, on the Atlantic Ocean; incorporated 1897. The city is a resort and convention center and contains some light industry; products include electronic equipment, printed materials, and textiles. The community was founded in 1870-71 as a summer resort for temperance advocates and is named for the Methodist Episcopal bishop Francis Asbury. Population 17,015 (1980); 16,799 (1990); 16,930 (2000).
