Keene, city, seat of Cheshire County, southwestern New Hampshire, on the Ashuelot River; incorporated as a town 1753, as a city 1874. Machinery, optical equipment, furniture, and textiles are produced. Several life insurance companies have their home offices here. Winter and summer resorts are nearby, notably around Mount Monadnock. The city is the seat of Keene State College (1909). It was named in colonial times for an English diplomat, Sir Benjamin Keene.
