Lincoln, city in southeastern Nebraska, capital of the state, and seat of Lancaster County. Lincoln is a major grain market and a manufacturing, transportation, and educational center. Local products include processed food (especially meat), transportation equipment such as motorcycles and small commercial vehicles, pharmaceuticals, electronic and electrical equipment, and rubber goods. The area is served by Lincoln Municipal Airport.
Much of Lincoln's cultural life centers on the main campus of the University of Nebraska (1869). Other educational institutions include Nebraska Wesleyan University (1887), Union College (1891), and a junior and community college. Sites of interest include the towering State Capitol, designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and built between 1922 and 1932, which has a 122-m (400-ft) tower surmounted by a bronze statue called “The Sower”; Fairview, home of politician and three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan; Folsom Children's Zoo and Botanical Gardens; the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, which emphasizes 20th-century American art; the Museum of Nebraska History, focusing on the state's cultural heritage; University of Nebraska State Museum, with extensive displays on natural history; and the National Museum of Roller Skating.
