Bozeman, city, seat of Gallatin County, southern Montana, in the fertile Gallatin Valley of the Rocky Mountains; incorporated 1883. Bozeman is the seat of Montana State University (1893); it also serves as a market center for livestock and grain and as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and other tourist areas. The city is named for the frontiersman John M. Bozeman, who brought the first settlers here in 1864. Population 21,645 (1980); 22,660 (1990); 27,509 (2000).
