Springfield, city in southwestern Missouri and seat of Greene County, in the foothills of the Ozark Plateau. Springfield is the distribution center for the Ozarks region, which covers much of southern Missouri and parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The city's commercial, health care, manufacturing, and financial services sectors are important to its economy. Manufactures include electronic equipment, stainless steel products, processed food, and plastic and rubber goods. The city is served by the Springfield-Branson Regional Airport.
Springfield is the seat of Drury College (1873), Southwest Missouri State University (1905), Central Bible College (1922), Berean University of the Assemblies of God (1948), Baptist Bible College (1950), Evangel University (1955), and two community colleges. Museums include the Museum of Ozarks History, the Springfield Art Museum, and the Frisco Railroad Museum. With noted collections on the Ozarks, the Ralph Foster Museum is located in the School of the Ozarks, in nearby Point Lookout.
