Kirkwood, city, St. Louis County, eastern Missouri, a residential and commercial suburb of St. Louis, on the Meramec River; incorporated 1865. A community college and a transportation museum are here. A planned suburb, it was platted in 1853 and is named for James P. Kirkwood, a railroad official. Population 27,987 (1980); 27,291 (1990); 27,324 (2000).
