Independence, city in western Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City, and seat of Jackson County. It is a manufacturing, distribution, and retail center; manufactures include agricultural machinery, small arms ammunition, and processed food.
President Harry S. Truman lived much of his life in Independence, which honors his memory with the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, containing the house he shared with his wife, Bess. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, housing his personal papers and a noted mural by Thomas Hart Benton, is also located in the city. The graves of the Trumans are on the museum's grounds.
