Oxford, city in northern Mississippi. The seat of Lafayette County, Oxford is located adjacent to University, the site of the University of Mississippi (1844). The city's manufactures include electric motors, clothing, wood products, and appliances. The author William Faulkner lived in Oxford; his home is open to the public. The community was settled by whites in 1836 and named for Oxford, England, in the hope of becoming a university seat. It was incorporated in 1837. In 1962 Oxford was the scene of violent civil disturbances when James Meredith enrolled as the first black student at the university. Two people were killed and several hundred were injured in confrontations with police, army and the National Guard. The result was the successful integration of the university.
