Saint Cloud, city, seat of Stearns County and also in Benton and Sherburne counties, central Minnesota, on the Mississippi and Sauk rivers, in a productive farm region; incorporated as a city 1868. It has been famous since 1870 for quarrying and polishing granite. Optical equipment, printed materials, and processed poultry items are also produced. Direct mail and health care services contribute to the economy as well. St. Cloud State University (1869) is here. The community was settled in 1853 and grew as a river port.
