Minnesota (MN), Rochester - Pictures


Rochester, city, seat of Olmsted County, southeastern Minnesota, on the Zumbro River; incorporated 1858. It is a commercial, manufacturing, and medical center situated in an agricultural area; products include electronic and electric equipment, metal items, and processed food. Rochester is particularly noted as the site of the Mayo Foundation (1919), which includes the Mayo Clinic (1914), now one of the chief employers in the city. The Foundation also includes five educational programs: the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine (1915); Mayo's Continuing Medical Education (1967); the Mayo Medical School (1972); the Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences (1973); and the Mayo Graduate School (1989). Among the city's other institutions of higher education are the Minnesota Bible College (1912), a community college, a technical college, and a school of nursing. Also located in the city are the Olmsted County Historical Society and Museum; the Rochester Art Center; Mayowood, the former family home of Dr. Charles Horace Mayo; and the Mayo Patient and Health Education Center on the Mayo campus. The community, settled in 1854, is named for Rochester, New York. Population 57,890 (1980); 70,745 (1990); 85,806 (2000).
