Minnetonka, city, Hennepin County, southeastern Minnesota, on Minnehaha Creek and Lake Minnetonka, near Minneapolis; incorporated 1969. Corporate offices and industries manufacturing machinery, optical equipment, and recreational goods are in the area. The region was settled in the 1850s. The community is named for Lake Minnetonka, the name of which is derived from a Native American term. Population 38,683 (1980); 48,370 (1990); 51,301 (2000).
