Marshall, city in southwestern Minnesota, located about 210 km (about 130 mi) southwest of Minneapolis. Marshall is the seat of Lyon County. Marshall grew from a small farm trading center into the agricultural hub of southwestern Minnesota. Recently, food processing—including the production of ice cream, frozen pizza, food mixes, and corn syrup—has made Marshall a significant industrial city. The city is the site of Southwest State University (1963), part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Marshall was laid out in 1872 with the construction of the Winona & St. Peter Railroad, and was incorporated in 1876. The city was named in honor of William Marshall, governor of Minnesota from 1866 to 1870. Population 11,161 (1980); 12,023 (1990); 12,735 (2000).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
