Bemidji, city, seat of Beltrami County, northern Minnesota, on the Mississippi River and Bemidji and Irving lakes; incorporated 1905. It is a resort center, with lumber and wood-product industries. Bemidji State University (1913) is here. A large statue of the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his blue ox is a local attraction. The city grew around a trading post established here in 1888. It is named for a leader of the Ojibwa people.
