Anoka, city in central Minnesota, on the Mississippi River at its junction with the Rum River. The seat of Anoka County, Anoka is located about 32 km (about 20 mi) northwest of Minneapolis. Anoka was a trading post and a lumber center in its early years, but it grew as a farm-trade center. Manufacturing sustained its growth. The city has become part of the Twin Cities (MinneapolisSaint Paul-) greater metropolitan area and has expanded as a service center and a residential suburb. The first white settlers came here in 1844, and Anoka was incorporated in 1878. Its name is based on a Dakota Sioux word meaning “on both sides,” referring to its location on both banks of the Rum River. Population 15,634 (1980); 17,192 (1990); 18,076 (2000).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
