Ypsilanti, city, Washtenaw County, southeastern Michigan, on the Huron River, in a farm area; incorporated as a city 1858. It is a residential and industrial center; major manufactures of the area include motor vehicles and motor-vehicle parts. Eastern Michigan University (1849) and Cleary College (1883) are here. The community developed around a French trading post established in 1809. Originally called Woodruff's Grove, it was renamed in 1833 for Demetrios Ypsilanti, a hero of the Greek war of independence. Population 24,031 (1980); 24,846 (1990); 22,362 (2000).
