Benton Harbor, city, Berrien County, southwestern Michigan, on the Saint Joseph River at its mouth on Lake Michigan; settled mid-1800s, incorporated as a city 1891. Benton Harbor and its twin city across the river, Saint Joseph (settled circa 1830), form the trade and manufacturing hub for the surrounding area. Manufactures include household appliances and compressors. Lake Michigan College and the Mendel Center for Arts and Technology are here. Popular lake beaches are nearby. The city, named for the American painter Thomas Hart Benton, experienced economic decline in the 1970s and 1980s.
